5-15 Report (2/16/22)

Hi there! This past week has been uneventful on my end. I feel like I need to rethink how I structure the time I dedicate to this class and rethink the direction I want to take my research. Realizing that this class requires a significant amount of self motivation (which is both exciting, but new) I need to start actively seeking out and reading texts to help with projects moving forward. Just choose an in and GO. At this point, I think I’m going to switch gears from trying to learn more about Chinese theatre, but instead follow my interests in topics on the occult. However, the text Dr.D recommended me in class on 2/15 was really interesting and could possibly be explored more as well… Anyway, my plan right now is to seek out possible texts and have some research under my belt.

I’m looking forward to reading the texts for class on Thursday! That’s on my to-do list for this week.

Sorry that this report was so brief- I intend to change that with the next one. Thank you!

5-15 Report (1/31/22)

Hello! With this course well underway, I feel like there are many directions I can take my research in. After our workshop time last week, I feel like I gained a slightly better understanding of why my peers are interested in possibly looking into Queer studies of China. I’m not sure if this is something I still want to follow, seeing that there might not be a whole lot of material on the subject, and that other people are considering looking into very similar topics. I had also been interested in looking into studying theatre in Chinese History- but women were banned from the practice. So, I need to do some research and see how I can spin it to fit a Women in Chinese History course. Dr. D made an interesting point that I could approach the research from the perspective of what the “lack of women” meant in Chinese Theater. I need to chew on this some more…

The readings from this week did spark some other interests! The article on Divination is something I think I could really dive into further researching- the topic sounds absolutely fascinating. I’ve been practicing different types of divination (tarot, tea readings, rune stones, and palm readings) for several years now- So, getting the chance to look at how other cultures practice divination is right up my alley. (Also, just to clarify- I DON’T intend to use this research to appropriate any closed practices into my own. I just want to learn and appreciate! )

At this point, I feel like I need to dive into the readings and learn. I’m coming into this class not knowing much of anything about Chinese history and culture- so I need to familiarize myself with the content and start following lines of research that spark interest.

Anyways, I hope I did this right… I think this is what the 5-15 report was supposed to be… If not, I’ll try again next time!
